Parents and other citizens with knowledge about their local public schools are a tremendously effective influence on their legislators. Legislators, in fact, depend on this personal input to understand how state policies are affecting their constituents. When constituents consistently tell their local legislators that K-12 is a top priority, that message is taken to legislative leaders.

What to Do

  • A phone call or personal letter is most effective; a hand-written note or letter is excellent.

  • Be direct, honest and respectful; identify yourself as a constituent (if applicable).

  • Tell your own story to illustrate your concerns.

  • Be specific: try to deal with one issue at a time. Don’t be too long-winded.

  • Express your appreciation for the ways your school district has been supported by your legislators.

  • Consider asking, What will you do to address this issue? Asking this question will give you a starting point for following up with your legislator.

  • Establish a personal relationship with your legislators by staying in touch with them over time; this is very important and may ultimately make the most positive difference for Minnesota’s public schools.
